Protect yourself and your valuables this holiday period

Being the victim of fraud or other criminal activity can be traumatic - particularly at Christmas time. But we know that there are people who continuously look for opportunities to steal whatever they can, whenever they can.

This Christmas, it's worth taking a minute to consider what you can do to protect yourself and your family when out shopping, and when shopping online. Here are a few tips that may help:

    • Only use ATMs in well lit areas where there are other people about. Check that the machine hasn't been tampered with, if it looks suspicious, report it. Never tell anyone your PIN, or keep PIN details with your card
    • Stay within sight of your Laser or Credit Card when paying for goods or services
    • Always put your money and cards in a safe place while you are out shopping ... a handbag or wallet in a back pocket are easy targets for thieves. Keep valuables in an inside pocket or smaller bag worn under your jacket. Avoid carrying large sums of cash where possible.
    • Never leave valuables on view in your car. Move your car to another location after you have put shopping in the boot (you never know who is watching you).
    • Be aware of online fraud - Fraudsters employ different methods through various channels to cheat people out of their money. Some examples include fake online websites that request personal banking information, bogus job offers ('money mules'), fake lottery wins, and much more:
      • If you use online banking or shop online, be sure to have up to date security software on your computer
      • Watch our for emails claiming to be from couriers delivering ordered goods, requesting you to open an attached delivery notice/ invoice or to click on a link to confirm a delivery schedule
      • It is particularly important to know what steps you can take to protect yourself online and from other fraudulent activity
      • You can reduce fraud by being aware of the latest scams and by knowing what to look out for.
